Hallitus esittäytyy – Emmi Kosomaa: Bruises and internationalization

Hello everyone!

I am a third year energy and environmental student sitting in the board of our lovely student union this year. My responsibilities are international affairs and new students. This includes an interesting combination of student advocacy, social affairs and integration of both Finnish and international students into our awesome student life. To remind me of my field of study I have also been named as the overqualified hippie.

I applied to the board last autumn, because I wanted to have the opportunity to influence the direction of our quite young student union, the possibilities to grow as a person and learn new things in addition to applying good practices learned from other positions. Previously, I have been active in my own guild IK, Guild of Civil Engineers in international matters, especially last year with the title master of foreign affairs in the board. There, with the help of our freshmen captain, we managed to bring our international students closer to the Finnish students. The feedback was clearly positive and I wanted to make the internationalization University wide. Now the scale is many times bigger than what I got used to last year and I still feel a bit lost, but I’m sure I’ve made the right decision. The group we have is epic with a great team spirit and therefore going to the office “early” in the morning isn’t as difficult as it could be for a night owl as me.

During my spare time I like to boost my energy levels by playing underwater rugby. It is a fairly uncommon sport played underwater with a sinking ball and goals on the bottom. The group of active members is as a family all with the same love for the crazy sport. The sport itself is aggressive from time to time, so don’t be afraid if I’m filled with bruises one day, it only means I’ve for once had time to go to my trainings!

I love to meet new people and hear others’ opinion, so don’t hesitate to come and talk to me even if it would be about the weather outside.

Hugs,

Emmi
