Introducing the board of AYY: Milja Asikainen, International affairs

Hi!

I am Milja Asikainen, a fifth-year physics student majoring in systems and operations research. This year, however, I am taking a break from my studies as I act in the AYY Board being responsible for international affairs, working life affairs and language issues. I am a newcomer in AYY, but previously I have been an active member in the Guild of Physics and the International Association of Physics Students, for example.

I considered applying for the Board for several years before I finally decided to do it. Last autumn, I was an exchange student in Chalmers in Gothenburg. The pause to reflect and the distance to Otaniemi made me convinced that I want to contribute one year for this community. For me, it seemed that the Board provides you with the opportunity to do interesting things and learn something new in an incredible group. And I was right about it! Although my calendar in January has been full from morning until late at night, every day has been so interesting and inspiring.

Being an exchange student opened my eyes to see how difficult it is for international students to integrate into our community. This year, my intention is to work in order to /wp-content/uploads/Milja_Asikainen.jpgmake our student union more multi-cultural. Far too many fail to get to know some great people in fear of the language barrier or cultural differences.

If, at any time of the year, you have something that comes to your mind regarding internationality, student union or any other issue, please come and talk to me!

-Milja
