Tällä viikolla blogissa julkaistaan opiskelijoiden haastatteluita eri teemoihin liittyen. Maanantain kunniaksi kysyimme ajatuksia koulun alkuun ja orientaatioviikkoon liittyen. Tiistaina Aalto Partyn innoittamana puhumme aaltolaisuudesta.

1. Aaltolaisuus on ainutlaatuista. Meillä Suomessa tai jopa maailmalla ei ole mahdollisuuksia samanlailla kulttuurien ja alojen kohtaamisiin. Aallossa on mahdollisuus päästä oppimaan ja kokemaan erilaisia opiskelijakulttuureita ja löytää niiden välistä juuri se oma juttu. Aaltolaisuus on iloista, inspiroivaa ja energistä. Aaltolaisuus on sitä kun muut tavoittelevat pilviin, niin me aaltolaiset tähtiin.
2. Kulttuurirajat varmasti hälvenevät vielä, mutta eivät varmasti koskaan poistu (eikä pidäkkään!). En kuitenkaan usko, että tilanne on hirveän erilainen nykyisestä. Todennäköisesti yhteistyötä eri alojen kanssa tehdään vielä enemmän. Kurssikokonaisuudet ovat enemmän aaltomaisia yhdistäen tekniikan, taiteen ja talouden. Toivoisin myös, että suurin osa kutsuisi itseään ensisijaisesti aaltolaisiksi 🙂

1. Aaltolaisuus auttaa pitämään Suomen asutettuna. Se merkitsee sitä, että nuori ja vanha sekä taide ja tiede kohtaavat. Se on säkenöivää.
2. Luulen että opiskelijoissa tapahtuu suurin muutos. Tällä hetkellä party ja duuni ovat eri juttuja, mutta ne tulevat yhdistymään. Se tarkoittaa sitä, että duunissa on vähemmän verta ja hikeä sekä että partysta tulee hillitympää.

Kauppislainen Henje hyödyntää monitieteellisyyttä opiskelemalla myös informaatioverkostoja

1. Minulle aaltolaisuus merkitsee mahdollisuuksia valita ja mahtavaa opiskelijakulttuuria. Olen viidennen vuoden maisteriopiskelija kauppakorkeakoulun puolella, mutta aloitin tänä syksynä opinnot myös informaatioverkostoilla. Poikkitieteellisyys avartaa, ja sen toteutumista kannattaa tukea! Toinen upea asia ovat Aallon kaikkien koulujen pitkät opiskelijaperinteet ja älyttömän rikas opiskelijakulttuuri, joka oman kokemukseni mukaan tuo kaikkien sitä tekevien ja kokevien opiskeluaikaan hienoja kokemuksia.
2. Uskon että kymmenen vuoden päästä aaltolaisuus on aidosti poikkitieteellisempää. Kylterille on tavallista lukea teknillistä tai taiteellista sivuainetta ja päinvastoin, ja aaltolaiset tapaavat toisiaan yhteisillä tuotekehitys- tai muilla kaikkien koulujen yhteisillä kursseilla. Korkeakoulujen vanhoja perinteitä ei ole unohdettu, mutta myös uusia yhteisiä juttuja on toivottavasti ehditty rakentaa matkan varrella.

1. Mahdollisuuksia ja paneutumista. On innostavaa päästä tekemään lähes mitä tahansa porukalla, joka yleensä panostaa hommiin täysillä. Ja vaikkei kaikkeen ehtisikään mukaan, on silti hienoa nähdä miten muut innokkaat tyypit tekevät asioita sydämellään.
2. Aallon brändi on jo niin vakiintunut,  että sinne tullaan opiskelemaan koska tiedetään, että oppimisympäristö tarjoaa lukemattomia mahdollisuuksia monitieteisessä yhteisössä, ja opetus perustuu vuorovaikutukselle ja kokeilevalle oppimiselle.

Tuomas odottaa innolla uusien opiskelijoiden saapumista

1. Koulun aloitus ja orientaatio on mahtavaa aikaa kun koko Otaniemi herää kesähorroksestaan vastaanottamaan uusia fukseja. Ihmiset palailevat kesätöistä ja yhtäkkiä joka paikassa tapahtuu. Yhdessä fuksikapteenien kanssa koko alkuvuoden kestänyt valmistelu kulminoituu uusien opiskelijoiden saapumiseen ja koulun alkuun. Upea vuosi tulossa.
2. Orientaatio on mielenkiintoinen yhdistelmä perinteisiä tapahtumia ja uusia ihmisiä. Orientaation tapahtumista Otasuunnistukset, joissa vanhemmat opiskelijat esittelevät Otaniemeä fukseille, ovat aina olleet oma suosikkinitapahtumani. Tulevalta viikolta odotan ennen kaikkea kiinnostavia kohtaamisia ja uusia tuttavuuksia.

1. Kesän loppua ja Teekkarikylän henkiinheräämistä. Kesätöiden loppua, sitä, että kavereita näkee taas ilman sen suurempaa suunnittelua ja säännöllistä kortinpeluuta ja kahvinjuontia kiltiksellä. Ehkä vähän myös opiskelua.
2. En osaa edes valita, kun oon odottanut fuksiviikkoa niin paljon! Mutta varmaan ylipäätään menoa ja meininkiä, kavereiden näkemistä ja uusia fukseja. Ja sitä ettei tarvii pestä pyykkiä kun ei tarvii kauheesti muita vaatteita kuin haalarin. Mielenkiinnolla odotan kanssa sitä, että miten kylterit näkyy menossa mukana ja että pääseekö niihin tutustumaan.

1. Koulun alku tarkoittaa minulle aina kesän päättymistä ja uuden alkua. Minulla oli kesällä ITP, mikä oli opettavainen, mutta odotan kuitenkin omien opintojen alkua. On mukavaa nähdä tutut kasvot luennoilla.
2. Minulla alkaa viimeinen vuosi, mikä tarkoittaa loppurutista, mutta kuitenkin nauttimista viimeisestä opiskeluvuodesta. Olen menossa KY:n vaellukselle ja KY Accountingin mukaan Tokioon. Lisäksi Aalto Women in Business Students organisaatiolla on paljon tarjottavaa opiskelijoille ja meillä on tulossa monia upeita tapahtumia. Kaikkiaan uusi lukuvuosi, uudet haasteet ja mahdollisuudet.

On Thursday morning, the bus headed to Karamalmi, the headquarters of Nokia.

The newly renewed shiny blue showroom offered a pleasant atmosphere for the presentation and demos of the day. At first, we learned about Nokia’s history all the way from the first paper factory to mobile phone success and the current Nokia Networks. The latest major news have included the purchase of Alcatel-Lucent.

Tsinghua delegation was particularly enthusiastic about the demos which presented Nokia’s new technologies and they got to try out map services working with oculus rift and segway filming 3D videos.

After the lunch, we learned about start-up company facilities maintained by Nokia, from where companies can rent rooms or work desks. In addition, we visited Me and MyCity, the concept that operates in eight cities in Finland. Through the concept, the majority of the Finnish sixth-graders can learn to operate in the working life and society. At first, pupils have ten lessons under the direction of their teacher concerning different sectors in society, job search, working life and taxation, for example. After this, they write a job application and CV, based on which they are employed by one of the services and companies of the city. Each company also has a CEO. Children have jobs and participate in meetings, go to the bank and vote.

Me and MyCity is a teaching innovation that has received international acclaim and the royal couple of Sweden, for example, has visited Me and MyCity. Children have also consistently provided excellent feedback. A similar concept is being prepared for ninth-graders.

After Nokia, we headed to Design Factory to get to know their activities. We were presented with an extensive tour and learned about their operations. Our guests were particularly delighted by the multidisciplinary aspect of Design Factory.

Next, it was time to head to Startup Sauna. Chairperson of AaltoES Julius presented their activities and we took a traditional group picture on a sauna bench. We learned more about the Finnish startup scene at Entocube’s container. Later in the evening, we tasted Entocube’s crickets at the cocktail event.

From the Startup sauna, we headed back to Design Factory with a fancy ride, the museum vehicle Marmon, which drove our Chinese guests around Otaniemi.

At Design Factory, the evening began with a cocktail event, from where we continued to the sitsit at Stage. In addition to the Chinese guests, the alumni involved in Tsinghua cooperation also participated in the event. Finnish delicacies were served: as a starter we had rye bread with smoked salmon filling, the main course was meat balls with mashed potatoes and the dessert was Finnish ”squeaky” cheese. The programme included traditional sitsi songs, exchange of gifts and the surprising triple quartet performance of the Polytech Choir. Our guests also sang numerous Chinese songs, which added to the unique atmosphere.

AYY:llä on tänä vuonna, ja toki myös aikaisemmin, käyty kiivaasti keskustelua yhteisössä toimivien kerhojemme tasa-arvoisuudesta. Homma nousi alkukeväästä pinnalle, kun Lotta Aarikka kertoi omista kokemuksistaan Otaniemessä blogissansa. Keskustelu on ollut ajoittain hyvää ja ajoittain asiatonta. AYY julkaisikin avoimen kirjeen yhteisöllemme piakkoin blogikirjoituksen jälkeen. Keskustelu tasa-arvosta on aina tervetullutta.

Kevään viimeisessä edustajiston kokouksessa AYY:n hallitus tehtäväkseen selvittää miten tasa-arvo toteutuu AYY:ssä ja sen piirissä toimivissa yhdistyksissä.

Olen ottanut henkilökohtaisesti ponnen työstettäväkseni ja pohtinut miten asian kanssa etenisi. Viime kuukausina olen käynyt lukuisia keskusteluita kerhojen toiminnasta ja yleisesti tasa-arvosta. Kekusteluissa olen huomannut, että mitään selkeää yhtenäistä käsitystä siitä, mitä tasa-arvoinen kohtelu tarkoittaa ei ole. Monille asia on yksinkertainen ja selkeä, toisille taas käsitteetkin ovat epäselviä.

Asian hankaluuden vuoksi hallitus on tullut tulokseen, että ennen ponteen vastaamistamme tulee kirkastaa aihepiiriin liittyvät käsitteet, jonka lisäksi perehdymme syvemmin toimintaamme määritteleviin lakeihin.

Aloitamme nyt kesälomien päätyttyä selvityksen, jossa kirjallisuuteen perehtymisen lisäksi keskustelemme kokonaisuuteen liittyvien yhdistysten kanssa voidaksemme arvioida, millä yhdistyksillä on olemassa syrjiviä rakenteita. Näiden vastausten ja taustatiedon pohjalta rakennamme vastauksen ponteen. Vastaamme ponteen seuraavassa edustajiston kokouksessa syyskuussa, mutta tarkempi selvitys saattaa valmistua vasta seuraavan kokouksen jälkeen.

On Friday morning, we woke up to realise that it was the last day of our Chinese guests. We headed to Tampere and Cargotec at 10am. The party of the previous night had made the most of our passengers tired and a few-hour bus drive to Tampere was the most quiet bus trip of the week. After taking a nap, our cheery and more enthusiastic group arrived in Tampere.

Cargotec is a Finnish listed company whose brands include MacGregor, Kalmar and Hiab. Cargotec is a provider of cargo handling solutions for ships and ports, for example, and during the day we learned much about the wonderful world of containers.

There are approximately 600 million containers in use around the world and every fourth of them is moved with the help of Kalmar equipment. Every other ship in the world carries MacGregor equipment. Therefore, Cargotec is not a small player in the world’s ports and the sea. The Chinese markets and ports play a significant role as the world’s busiest container port is located in Shanghai, China. In top 10 port statistics, the Chinese are strong, as China has as many as six of the ten largest container ports.

In Kalmar technology and learning centre, we learned about testing and simulation, which are an important part of product development process. Moving containers with a control panel was surprisingly difficult and of course they would not let our group to move real containers. With the help of virtual reality glasses, we could walk in the middle of a 3D model which maintenance men, for example, use in their work.

After returning to Helsinki, our Chinese guests had a few hours for shopping in the city centre, where they purchased some Finnish design classics and Moomin products. After the shopping spree, we headed to Kruununhaka to Restaurant Kolme Kruunua along a beautiful coastal road. Secretary General Koskenniemi and the chairpersons of the board Liu Chang and Ferm gave touching farewell speeches that emphasised the uniqueness of our cooperation but also the fact that after this intense week we made several new friends from the other side of the world. The visit was eye-opening for both of the parties and also taught us westerners to look at our culture in a new way. We had a delicious meal and discussed about eating meat and compared holiday and working hours, but also discussed marriage, having children and the rights of sexual minorities over the dinner.

After the dinner, the majority of the Chinese delegation came to AYY’s central office to play werewolves despite their early wake-up call and tiredness that had accumulated during the week. The relaxed closing of the busy week ended with casual hangout and naturally involved a few more gifts: our own Board posed wearing Tsinghua shirts and our architect students both got special drawing books from Chairperson Chang (architect himself). We were rather sad to say goodbye to our new Chinese friends in front of the central office a few hours before their flight. But this is not the end.

On Wednesday, we visited the elevator factory of Kone in Hyvinkää. In Hyvinkää factory, Kone manufactures elevator motors and more special elevator cars manufactured in small batches.

As a company, Kone is naturally one of the most interesting ones in Finland. No other company can say that they are the market leader in China, while Kone has had an approximately 20 per cent annual growth rate already for many years.

Thus, perhaps the most interesting discussions of our visit to Kone were related to the growth rate. In Hyvinkää, we were told that a strong corporate culture is the core of business success, and we were pondering on how a common culture can be developed and maintained in the market where the company is growing so rapidly.

The position of Kone in the Chinese market seems very interesting also in other respects. Firstly, as the market leader, Kone cannot choose market segments where it competes, but it has to be practically the best in all the segments. Secondly, the fragmentation of the Chinese market will most likely determine much of the future challenges of Kone: we can no longer say that there is one low-end product, for example, but low-end products are divided into several subcategories in terms of customer expectations. Due to these developments, Kone will most likely continue to have hands full of work in China and it all seems to go well.

In the following blog post, we will tell you what we discussed with the President of the Republic later on Tuesday.

Our second day with the Tsinghua delegation began at Otaniemi Radisson SAS at 8.10am from where we headed to the first company visit of the week. Our guests were very excited, even though the previous night had been long and full of new experiences. However, perhaps thanks to the Finnish sauna, they had had a good night sleep.

Our bus headed to Turenki, the closest tree felling location of UPM in the Helsinki region. During our journey, Aili Piironen told us about UPM operations abroad and in China, in particular. One of the largest factories of UPM is located in Jiangsu province.

The factory will soon have new factory machinery, which can produce up to 360,000 tonnes of specialty papers annually. After a little over 1.5 hour journey we arrived to the felling area where we were given helmets for our protection. Tsinghua students found helmets and vests interesting, but they were even more excited when we walked deeper in the woods.

After a short walk, we reached a harvester. The area in question had only one harvester and one employee. We got to see the device in action and marvel at how quickly the trees fell and branches were hatched. We were also told how the device can estimate the quality and thickness of the wood in real time and estimate the best purpose for the wood. Trees are marked with colour stamps so that they can be processed in a correct manner in the next location. Tsinghua students were very pleased when they got to sit in the harvester. For safety reason, the machine was naturally turned off.

From the felling area we headed to the cabin of UPM and this was one of the first summer cottages that our guests got to see in addition to Otaniemi Rantasauna. The cottage was located by the lake. Before the meal, we had the opportunity to pick up mushrooms and blueberries from the nearby forest. We ate blueberries straight away but saved mushrooms for the dinner. UPM offered us a delicious lunch, including whitefish, new potatoes and chanterelle sauce.

After the hospitality of UPM, we headed back to Helsinki where we visited the Chinese embassy and met the ambassador. We heard about the relations between China and Finland, which have been excellent for a long period of time (since 1950).We also discussed the benefits of the Chinese and Finnish relations. Learning from the culture and education of one another was brought up in the discussion. We also discussed much about China’s rapidly emerging and growing markets, which already offer plenty of opportunities for Finnish companies but unfortunately mostly focus on large companies. China also needs the Finnish innovation expertise as well as new small and medium-sized companies. Perhaps Slush China in October can offer new opportunities for this purpose. (Slush China will be organised in Beijing on 13 Oct 2015)

After the day’s visits, we had some time to see the sightseeings in the centre of Helsinki.We showed our guests Finlandia Hall, Temppeliaukio Church, Parliamentary House, the Helsinki Music Centre, Kiasma and the Helsinki Cathedral. Our guests were most intrigued by the Helsinki Cathedral. Unfortunately, we only had time to see the sightseeings briefly as we had also other plans for the evening. We had reserved Sportstugan for the evening, where we had dinner, went to the sauna and enjoyed the beautiful weather. Tsinghua guests were in awe by the nature, lake and fresh air, in particular. Although the Finnish sauna was too hot for some of them, some of our guests already asked for more heat. We had a genuine Finnish sauna experience with Chairperson of the Student Union Liu Chang. Not all of our guests were able to swim but they still popped into the lake and enjoyed the fresh Finnish water. The evening could have continued for ever but we went to bed quite early as we would have perhaps the most important meeting of our trip with the President of Finland in the morning.

All in all, the day was excellent. The visits raised many thoughts on how everyone in Finland should consider how we could better utilise our international relations and China’s major growth potential, in particular. In addition, we were able to offer many new and exciting adventures to our guests that they will probably never forget.

This week, a ten-member delegation of Tsinghua University from China visits AYY. We will publish a brief post each day concerning the events and issues of the day. Here is some background on the history and purpose of our cooperation to bear in mind when reading the posts.

The cooperation with Tsinghua Student Union began in 2004 when Oskari Nokso-Koivisto, SYL’s chairperson at that time, met the chairperson of Tsinghua Student Union Wang Songtao in a conference in Sweden. They got along very well and Oskari brought Songtao to Finland to meet important leaders in politics and business life and to spend the nights in the depths of Otaniemi. Their friendship continued and they decided to extend their personal cooperation to the organisational level in 2008. TKY took the responsibility for the cooperation and the first delegations visited each other in 2009.

In the autumn of 2013, the Memorandum of Understanding was signed with the Chinese, in which they agreed that Tsinghua will send a ten-member delegation to Finland every year and AYY will visit China every other year. It was also agreed that an alumni network will be established around the cooperation to maintain the established relations with China.

And why do we cooperate with such a distant student union? Tsinghua University is one of the world’s most prestigious universities where alumni and former active student union members, in particular, have positions in all important decision-making organs and corporate management in China. That is why it is very likely that some of the Chinese who have visited Finland will eventually achieve such positions. In the future, good relations with these persons may play an important role both in politics and business life.

During the week, our guests became familiar with Finnish companies, society, political system and, of course, culture and the beautiful nature. Their schedule was tight but we made lasting friendships that will bear fruit in the future.

On Monday morning the big conference room at AYY’s office was buzzing with anticipation: our week with a delegation of Tsinghua University was finally about to begin! AYY’s board, general secretary and some members of previous boards along with Eero Eloranta from Aalto University had gathered to welcome the delegation. Mr Eloranta started the day by introducing the guests to our university. The main point in his presentation was innovation and entrepreneurship, which are hot topics also in China. Country’s premier Li Keqiang stated in January that the power of “mass entrepreneurship and innovation” will ensure that China’s economy won’t suffer a hard landing.

After some introductions from both universities and AYY we were joined by SYL’s board members for lunch. Their presentation, followed with a meeting with some representatives from political parties (The Finns Party, SDP and Green League), the delegation had the possibility to see how our political system works and how students, for example, can make a difference in Finland.

A closer look to student life was next on our schedule, when Polytechnical Students’ Museum opened its door to the group. One of the most memorable moments of the day was the pure joy our guests expressed after finding ripe raspberries, wild strawberries and blueberries on a path right behind the museum.

At the end of the day we all gathered to sauna with some of AYY’s volunteers and Chinese students to enjoy some barbeque and sauna. Matti Hämäläinen from Aalto Tongji Design Factory shared some of his experiences and thoughts about Chinese culture, which lead to some interesting conversations. The conversations continued well into the night while we introduced our guests to the miracles of sauna and swimming, a perfect way to relax before an early wakeup on Tuesday morning.

Opiskelemiseen, opetukseen ja koulutuspolitiikkaan liittyy kourallinen myyttejä, jotka elää porskuttavat vuodesta toiseen. Myytit ovat hauskoja juttuja, jumaltaruja ja tarinoita. Mutta kun niiden perusteella aletaan tehdä politiikkaa tai suunnitella tulevaisuutta, minulla on tapana huolestua. Oikaistaanpa nyt siis muutama yleisin olettamus.

1. Jos minulle ei myönnetä lisäaikaa, opintoni tuhoutuvat, enkä voi koskaan saattaa niitä päätökseen.

Opintoaikojen rajaus säätelee nimensä mukaan opintoaikaa. Yliopistolaki ja yliopisto voivat siis jättää myöntämättä lisäaikaa, joka tarkoittaa, että et voi ilmoittautua läsnäolevaksi ja tehdä opintoja. Vaikka sinulla ei olisi opiskeluoikeutta eli “oikeutta opiskella”, voit hakea opiskeluoikeutesi palauttamista. Lain mukaan hakemus voidaan tehdä osallistumatta opiskelijavalintaan. Opintosuorituksesi eivät opintorekisteristä katoa minnekään ja ne voidaan todennäköisesti hyväksilukea myöhemminkin osaksi jotain muuta tutkintoa.

2. Yliopistoissa on aloja, joilla koulutetaan työttömäksi.

Ei. Koulutus suojaa työttömyydeltä, vaikka tämä suojavaikutus on pienentynyt kansamme koulutustason nousun myötä. Käytännössä suojavaikutus tarkoittaa, että mitä korkeampi koulutus, sitä pienempi todennäköisyys jäädä työttömäksi. Tämä tilastollinen tosiasia koskee pääpiirteittäin aivan kaikkia aloja, vaikka jokaisella alalla on toki riski jäädä työttömäksi.

3. Lukukausimaksut tuovat rahaa yliopistoille.

Lukukausimaksut olisivat järkevä tapa rahoittaa yliopiston toimintaa, jos ne maksettaisiin ruskeassa kirjekuoressa tiskin alta ilmoittautumisen yhteydessä. Taloudellisesti valitettavasti – lopulta kuitenkin ehkä onneksi – näin ei ole.

Lukukausimaksujen hallinnointiin kuluu rahaa. Lisäksi kaikissa maissa, joissa lukukausimaksut ovat käytössä, on käytössä myös stipendijärjestelmä, jolla tuetaan vähävaraisten ja erityisen lahjakkaiden opiskelijoiden opiskelua – myös meillä stipendijärjestelmää vaatii laki. Kun nämä hallinnolliset kulut sekä stipendijärjestelmät otetaan huomioon, lukukausimaksut tuottavat hyvin vähän rahaa, tai saattavat aiheuttaa jopa ylimääräisiä kustannuksia (kannattaa tutustua näihin AYY:n materiaaleihin viime vuosien lukukausimaksukokeilusta).

Lukukausimaksujen käyttöönotto saattaa todellisuudessa tulla yhteiskunnallemme todella kalliiksi ns. takaoven kautta. Vaikka koulutus on ollut maksutonta, sen hankkimaan tulleet ulkomaalaiset ovat kuluttaneet Suomessa asuessaan ja 2/3 heistä on jäänyt Suomeen valmistumisen jälkeenkin. Tästä joukosta 73 % heistä on töissä ja maksaa Suomeen veroja (Lähde: CIMO). Lukukausimaksujen käyttöönotto tyrehdyttää tämän rahavirran tyystin, sillä naapurimaiden näytön perusteella voimme olettaa, että lukukausimaksujen käyttöönotto pudottaa ulkomaalaisten opiskelijoiden määrän olemattomaksi.

4. Valmistumisajat ovat Suomessa ihan hirveän pitkiä.

Eräs viisas provosti sanoi minulle joskus, että sitä saa mitä mittaa. Valmistumisaikoja on mahdollista mitata moninaisella mittatikulla. Lasketaanko valmistumisajaksi koko opiskeluaika korkeakouluun hyväksytyksi tulemisesta valmistumisen hetkeen? Vai tulisiko laskelmista poistaa ne lukukaudet, jotka opiskelija on poissaoleva esimerkiksi armeijan, lapsen, työn tai toisen tutkinnon vuoksi? Näillä kahdella eri mittaustavalla saamme aikaan hyvin erilaiset valmistumisajat, ja nämä mittauserot selittävät, miksi tutkimuksissa ja tilastoissa valmistumisajat saattavat olla hyvin eri mittaisia.

5. Opiskelijat ovat laiskoja ja professorit ilkeitä.

Eikä olla ja eivätkä ole. Me olemme kaikki ihmisiä! Meillä on elämää yliopiston ulkopuolellakin, välillä unohdamme velvollisuutemme, toisinaan meidän on vaikea nähdä asioita kanssaihmistemme näkökulmasta. Yritetään kaikki vähän skarpata, varsinkin tuon viimeisen suhteen.
