Mitä ylioppilaskunnan pitäisi ensisijaisesti tehdä? (Nythän AYY tekee monesti sitä, mitä on aina ennenkin tehty.) Tähän kysymykseen pitäisi löytää vastaus, sillä se ohjaisi ylioppilaskuntaa tekemään Tärkeitä asioita vähemmän tärkeiden sijaan.
Yksinkertaistettuna vaihtoehtoja on kolme: edunvalvonta, palvelujen tarjoaminen ja yhteisön rakentaminen – todellisuus lienee jonkinlainen yhdistelmä näistä. Nyt kyse on siis painotuksesta, mikä toiminta on tärkeämpää kuin jokin muu? Tämän tekstin tarkoitus on avata vaihtoehtoa yhteisön rakentaminen. Jos se ei ole hyvä suunta toiminnalle, niin kerro parempi!
Tätä tekstiä varten olen haastatellut ylioppilaskunnan työntekijää, vapaaehtoista ja vaihtaria. Alla oleva kuvaus on minun tulkintani heidän näkemyksistään siitä, mitä ylioppilaskunnan pitäisi tehdä.
Haluan, että ideanne ja kommenttinne ohjaavat ylioppilaskunnan toimintaa, siksi teksti muistuttaa enemmän kyselyä kuin blogikirjoitusta. Palautteen kimppuun käy edustajiston jäsenten muodostama työryhmä syksyn aikana.
Se Tärkeä toiminta
Haastatteluista olen vetänyt johtopäätöksen, että ylioppilaskunta ei ole palvelutiski jäsenille, vaan tori tai foorumi, jossa jäsenet järjestävät toiminnan. Ylioppilaskunnan palvelut ovat palveluita, joiden tarkoitus on tukea jäsenten toimintaa. Näin ollen jos jäsenet eivät toimi, tulos AYY torilla on varsin laiha. Tiivistäen ylioppilaskunnan yhteisöllisessä toiminnassa on kolme tärkeää aluetta: uusien opiskelijoiden vastaanottaminen, vapaaehtoistoiminnan tukeminen ja viestiminen. Näiden lisäksi epätäydellisessä maailmassa ylioppilaskunnan on toteuttava edunvalvontaa.
Uusien opiskelijoiden vastaanottaminen
Ensimmäinen tehtävä ylioppilaskunnalla on sinä vuonna, kun uusi opiskelija tulee yliopistoon. Uudella opiskelijalla on monta käytännön ongelmaa, kuten asunnon löytäminen. On haaste sopeutua uuteen ympäristöön ja toimintakulttuuriin. Suurin tuki ja turva on oma ryhmä, uusi Me, jonka kanssa kohdataan samat haasteet. Meidän muodostuminen ei ole itsestään selvää, mutta pienissä se ryhmissä käy ehkä helpostikin. Lähes aina ryhmän muodostumista ovat onneksi helpottamassa tutorit (eli ISOhenkilöt).
Uusi opiskelija selviäisi kyllä ilman tutoria. Tietoa saa monesta paikasta, jos osaa kysyä oikeita kysymyksiä oikeilta ihmisiltä, mutta uutena on kovin vaikea ymmärtää, mikä on olennaista. Ilman opasta usein moni siisti ja/tai mielenkiintoinen juttu jää löytämättä, tai se löytyy liian myöhään. Näin voi löytää kostean opiskelijaelämän, uran vapaaehtoisena tai projektin, josta tulee opiskeluajan ydin. Torin tarjonnasta on päästävä perille, mitä opas, eli tutor, helpottaa.
AYY:n tehtävä liittyy monialaisuuteen ja erilaisuuden esiin tuomiseen. Jos uusista huolehtiminen jää ainoastaan erityisasemayhdistyksille (mm. killat, KY, Tokyo), niin näkökulma jää kovin kapeaksi. Uskallan väittää, että erilaisten ajatusten vaihto tapahtuu tehokkaammin juhlissa kuin luokassa ja siksi on olennaista, että tutor avaa opiskelijaelämää poikkitieteellisesti.
AYY:n pitää huolehtia tutoreiden yhteisestä koulutuksesta, virkistyksestä ja palautteesta. Tutoreiden harteille jää avata ovia.

Vapaaehtoistoiminta
Kun opiskelijat ovat laskeutuneet yliopiston arkeen, on aika saada heidät ulos arjesta tekemään saavuttamisen arvoisia asioita. Ennen kaikkea saada heidät huomaamaan, että ITSE voi tehdä ja saavuttaa ja tukea siihen löytyy ylioppilaskunnasta.
Ylioppilaskunta tarjoaa vapaaehtoistoimintaa useissa muodoissa, tutoreina, hallopedeina, toimikuntien jäseninä ja luottamustoimina. Vapaaehtoistoimintaa tarjoavat myös yhdistykset ja kerhot. Lisäksi tulevat projektiryhmät ja innokkaat henkilöt, jotka ovat päättäneet toteuttaa ideansa.
Ylioppilaskuntatoiminnasta juuri vapaaehtoistoiminta antaa jäsenille eniten. Toiminta antaa tulosta palveluiden (esim. bileiden) muodossa, mutta antaa myös jäsenelle mahdollisuuden vaikuttaa siihen, mitä hänen rahoillaan tehdään (millaisia bileitä järjestetään,). Vapaaehtoistoiminnan antamat kokemukset ja tilaisuudet oppia ovat parasta, mitä ylioppilaskunta voi tarjota. Samalla huomaa, että ylioppilaskunnassa voi ajatella ja toimia myös valmiiden raamien ulkopuolella, voi keksiä omansa. Järjestötoiminnan hyöty korostuu viimeistään työelämään siirtyessä.
Siksi ylioppilaskunnan pitäisi keskittyä järjestämään vapaaehtoistoimintaa sekä tukemaan yhdistysten ja projektien vapaaehtoistoimintaa. Tukemisella tässä tarkoitan tiedon, ihmisten ja toimintatapojen tarjoamista. Näin AYY-tori saadaan täyteen toimintaa.
Tulevaisuuden tehtävälistalla voisivat olla ainakin seuraavat:
- Saada yliopisto huomioimaan vapaaehtoistoiminta myös opintopisteitä jaettaessa.
- Huolehtia siitä, että vapaaehtoisryhmillä on käytössään luottamushenkilön, AYY-alumnin tai työntekijän (tai miksi ei professorin) tuki, palaute ja verkostot.
- Tarjota selkeä vapaaehtoisura palkintoineen. Saavuttamisen rinnalla myös tekemisestä tulee palkita.
- AYY-alumnitoiminnan aloittaminen. Yhdistys- ja järjestöaktiivien mukana pitäminen erilaisissa ohjausryhmissä on paljon rahaa arvokkaampaa toimintaa.

Viestintä
Yksi asia on saada nykyinen viestintä toiminaan. Kovin moni ei tiedä, mitä tapahtuu, miten saa yhteyden tai kannattaako olla yhteydessä. Torilla tapahtuu nytkin, mutta valitettavan moni jäsen ei tiedä siitä.
Asioista tietämisen jälkeen tulee osallistuminen. Koska kaikki eivät voi osallistua vapaaehtoisuuden kautta, tulee tarjota virtuaalinen paikka vaikuttaa ylioppilaskunnan toimintaan. Palautetta pyydetään ja siihen reagoidaan näkyvästi. Keskeneräinen toiminta on julkista, jotta siihen saadaan palautetta myös keskustoimiston ulkopuolelta. Virtuaaliseen jäsenyhteisöön liittyminen ja hyvien ideoiden peukuttamisen ei pitäisi olla liian paljon edes laiskimmalle jäsenelle.
Ja sitten taas palataan toiminnasta kertomiseen niin jäsenille kuin muuallekin. Tukemalla jäsenten projektien julkisuutta luodaan myös AYY:n ja Aaltolaisuuden identiteettiä: mitä kaikkea Aallossa opiskelijat tekevät.
Tehtävälistalle nousisivat esimerkiksi seuraavat asiat:
- Virtuaaliyhteisön alustan perustaminen.
- Viestinnän tarjoaminen tukimuotona jäsenten hankkeille.
- Opiskelijatoiminnasta kertominen AYY:n ulkopuolelle, muutenkin kuin kannanottojen kautta.

Edunvalvonta
Ylioppilaskunta on perinteisesti keskittynyt tekemään edunvalvontaa. Ja sitähän AYY tekee. Kuitenkin väitän, että ylioppilaskunnan ei pitäisi rakentaa itsestään organisaatiota, joka keskittyy yliopiston ongelmien ratkaisemiseen. Ylioppilaskunnan pitää tarjota kontakteja asianosaisiin, vastausten tarjoamisen sijaan. Kun kyse on “opiskelijan äänellä puhumisesta”, on ylioppilaskunnan kerättävä asianosaiset ja autettava konsensuksen luomisessa ja ulos myymisessä.

What should the Student Union be primarily doing?
(Currently, AYY does what has always been done.) We should find the answer to this question, which would direct the Student Union to work on Important matters instead of the less important ones.
To put it simply, there are three options: student advocacy, providing of services and building of the community – the reality is probably some sort of a combination of these options. We are now talking about the emphasis; which action is more important than the other? The purpose of this text is to explain the option of the building of the community. If this option is not a good direction for the operations, please tell us a better one!
For this text, I have interviewed the Student Union’s employee, a volunteer and an exchange student. The following description is my interpretation of their views on what the Student Union should be doing.
I wish that your ideas and comments guide the student union activities and that is why this text is more similar to a survey than a blog text. A working group which consists of the Representative Council members will go through the feedback during the autumn.
The Important activity
Based on these interviews, I made a conclusion that the Student Union is not a service desk for the members but rather a marketplace or a forum where the members organise activities. The purpose of the services of the Student Union is to support the activities of the members. Thus, if members do not operate, the result is not very successful. To put it briefly, the collective activities of the Student Union cover three important areas: the reception of new students, the support of voluntary activities and communications. In addition, the Student Union must represent students’ interests in this imperfect world.
Reception of new students
The Student Union has its first responsibilities on the year when a new student enrols at the University. A new student has many practical problems such as finding a place to live. It is a challenge to adapt to the new environment and the operational culture. The most significant support and security are provided by one’s own group, the new Us, with whom the student can face the challenges. The forming of ”Us” is not self-evident but it might happen easily in small groups. Fortunately, tutors will almost always assist in the formation of the group.
A new student can survive without a tutor. Information is available in many places if you just ask the right questions from the right people. However, when you are a new student, it is very difficult to understand what is essential. Without a guide, many interesting affairs will often not be discovered or they may be discovered too late. You can find the crazy student life, a career as a volunteer or a project which might become your life. You have to get involved with the selection of the marketplace. Your guide, the tutor, will make it easier for you.
AYY’s duties relate to multi-disciplinariness and bringing forth diversity. If new students are only looked after by guilds, KY and Tokyo, their perspective often remains narrow. I dare to say that the exchange of ideas happens more efficiently in parties than in the classroom and therefore it is essential that a tutor explains student life from a multi-disciplinary perspective.
AYY has to take care of tutors’ common training, recreation and feedback. It is tutors’ responsibility to open the doors for new students.

Voluntary activities
Once the students are accustomed to everyday life at university, it is time to get them out of it and do things worth achieving. Above all, we have to make them realise that STUDENTS THEMSELVES can do and achieve affairs and get support from the Student Union.
The Student Union provides several forms of voluntary activities; it has tutors, student representatives in administration, committee members and confidential posts. In addition, there are project groups and enthusiastic individuals who have decided to implement their ideas.
Of all the activities of the Student Union, the voluntary activities provide the most to the members. The activities give results in the form of services (parties, for example) but also the opportunity for the members to decide what to do with the funds (what kind of parties are organised). The experience from voluntary activities and learning opportunities are the best that the Student Union can provide. At the same time, students notice that they can think and act outside the box and invent their own ideas in the Student Union. The benefits from the organisational activities are noticed in the transition to working life at the latest.
Therefore, the Student Union should focus on organising voluntary activities and supporting voluntary activities in organisations and projects. With this support, I refer to the providing of information, people and practices. In this way, the AYY marketplace can be full of action.
The future list of duties could include at least the following:
- making the university acknowledge voluntary activities in the form of credits
- ensuring that voluntary groups have the support, feedback and networks of a person in a confidential post, an AYY alumni or an employee (or a university professor)
- providing a clear volunteer career with rewards, activities should be rewarded along with achievements
- starting the AYY alumni activities, keeping the active members of organisations and associations involved in various guidance groups is much more valuable than money

Communications
One issue is to make the current communications to work. Quite many students do not know what is going on, how to get in touch or whether to get in touch or not. Many affairs are currently happening at the marketplace but it is unfortunate that only few members know about it.
After knowledge comes participation. Since everyone is not able to participate on a voluntary basis, we should provide a virtual place to have effect on student union activities. We ask for feedback and react to it visibly. Incomplete operations are public so that we can also get feedback from outside the central office. Joining a virtual member community and clicking on good ideas should not be too much even for the laziest member.
Finally, we go back to the reporting of the operations to the members and outside the Student Union. By supporting the publicity of member projects, the identity of AYY and the Aalto community is created: we present the activities of Aalto students.
The following issues, for example, are on the list of duties:
- creating a platform for a virtual community
- providing communications as a form of support for member projects
- reporting student activities outside the AYY, not only in the form of statements

Student advocacy
The student union has traditionally focused on student avocacy and that is what AYY does. However, I argue that the student union should not be an organisation which focuses on solving the problems of the university. The student union should provide contacts between the parties concerned instead of providing answers. When it comes to “using the student’s voice”, the student union must gather the parties concerned and assist in communications and creating a consensus.
