Puhe Aalto-yliopiston lukukauden avajaisissa 1.9.2010 Jussi Valtonen

Dear president, honoured guests, aaltoners

When I was walking one summer day, I was going through in my mind the history of the creation of Aalto University: First came the idea, then the foundation, the illustrious name, the board, Tuula and finally the whole thing was blessed through the new University Law. The birth of Aalto has been a historically fast-moving episode in the history of Finnish universities.

Most of the changes have, however, been only structural. Many students and members of staff have said that, in everyday life, they have only seen evidence of Aalto in the brightly coloured flags outside university buildings. It makes me wonder if that’s really true.

When I came across the students’ notice board, I stopped to look at the posters, wondering how many of the Aalto things would have become reality without Aalto – Aalto Entrepreneurship Society, Aalto-on-Tracks and many of the interdisciplinary programmes – in actual fact most of the posters on the board. We have got off to a good start, but the effects of individual actions are limited. Although the wind of initial enthusiasm has filled our sails, we must not be fooled into thinking the road ahead will be easy – big choices are waiting for our community on the vast ocean ahead.

Personally, I see the campus as a key element in shaping how the Aalto community and culture as well as the university will develop. In making the choices regarding the campus, we need to far-sighted and able to look beyond the horizon, beyond the decade ahead.

Aalto campus should be alive, the beating heart of the university, where science and art meet technology and business – a campus that lives and breathes the pluralism, internationality and entrepreneurialism of our community.

We have been blessed with excellent opportunities for our journey. The future will tell whether we will have enough courage to take advantage of those opportunities. Through our daily choices and deeds, we are making decisions on what kind of a community Aalto will be for ourselves and future generations.

Dear teachers and students,
Let us passionately embrace the search for new things! Let us make bold choices while caring for our colleagues and inspiring each other. Both the university and the Student Union are committed to building a community like that.

Hopefully, as many people as possible will find the Aalto values worth adopting and commit to being builders of the Aalto community by giving their Aalto promise, the Code of Conduct, where teachers and students alike pledge to challenge each other to learn and discover together.

The Aalto community is emerges from diversity and requires contribution from each one of us. Let us value one another and commit ourselves to taking Aalto one step forward every day.

Arvoisa rehtori, kunniavieraat, hyvät aaltolaiset,

Kesäisenä päivänä kävellessäni kävin mielessäni läpi Aalto-yliopiston luomiskertomusta: Ensin tuli idea, sitten säätiö, kunniakas nimi, hallitus, Tuula ja lopulta kokonaisuus siunattiin yliopistolaissa. Aallon synty on ollut historiallisen rivakka ajanjakso suomalaisten yliopistojen historiassa.

Suuri osa tapahtumista on kuitenkin ollut hyvin rakenteellisia. Moni opiskelija ja henkilökuntaan kuuluva on todennut Aallon näkyvän arjessa vain värikkäinä lippuina yliopiston rakennusten edessä. Mietin mielessäni onko tosiaan näin?

Opiskelijoiden ilmoitustauluun törmätessäni pysähdyin katselemaan julisteita pohtien kuinka moni jutuista olisi toteutunut ilman Aaltoa. AaltoES, Aalto-on-Tracks ja moni yhteistyöohjelma – itse asiassa suuri osa ilmoitustaulun julisteista. Olemme päässeet hyvään alkuun, kuitenkin yksittäisten tempausten vaikutukset ovat rajalliset. Vaikka alkuinnostuksen tuuli on täyttänyt purjeemme emme saa tuudittautua helppoon matkaan – seuraavan ulapan takana yhteisöämme odottavat suuret valinnat.

Henkilökohtaisesti näen kampuksen keskeisenä valintana siinä millaiseksi Aalto-yhteisön kulttuuri ja siten yliopisto muodostuu. Valintaa tehdessämme tarvitaan kauaskatseisuutta, kykyä katsoa vuosikymmentä pidemmälle horisonttiin.

Kampuksen tulee olla elävä, yliopiston sykkivä sydän, jossa tiede ja taide kohtaavat tekniikan ja talouden. Kampus joka henkii yhteisön moniarvoisuudesta, kansainvälisyydestä ja yrittelijäisyydestä.

Matkallemme on tarjottu erinomaiset eväät – lähiajat näyttävät onko meillä rohkeutta tarttua niihin. Päätämme joka päivä valinnoillamme ja teoillamme millaisen yhteisön Aallosta rakennamme itsellemme ja tuleville sukupolville.

Hyvät opettajat ja opiskelijat,
Tarttukaamme intohimoisesti uuden etsimiseen, tehkäämme rohkeita valintoja toisistamme välittäen ja innostaen. Tällaisen yhteisön rakentamiseen yliopisto ja ylioppilaskunta ovat yhdessä sitoutuneet.

Toivottavasti mahdollisimman moni kokee nämä Aallon arvot omikseen ja sitoutuu syksyn aikana Aalto-yhteisön rakentajaksi antamalla Aalto-vakuutuksensa, Code of Conductin, missä opettajat ja opiskelijat sitoutuvat haastamaan toisensa, oppimaan ja löytämään yhdessä.

Aalto-yhteisö kumpuaa erilaisuudesta ja tarvitsee meidän jokaisen panosta. Arvostakaamme toisiamme ja sitoutukaamme teoissamme viemään Aaltoa eteenpäin jokaisena päivänä.
