AYY takes part in International Women’s Day

This year a focus area at AYY is equal and accessible community. We will carry out an equality survey, which addresses various forms of equality and potential problems in their implementation. At our board programme we also have projects Introduction of accessibility tutoring, Internationalization at home for all and Valuation and rewarding of tutoring.

In addition we decided to raise awareness on different aspects of equality. As it is Women’s day the board decided to donate 750 euros to Women’s bank  and become a shareowner. Women’s banks aim is to increase sustainable entrepreneurship and livelihood in developing countries.

The International Women’s Day has been celebrated for over a century. It started as a Socialist event and has evolved to celebration for women’s social, economic, political and cultural achievements.

The United Nations celebrated International Women’s Day for the first time day 1975 and also named the day as United Nations Day for Women’s Rights and International Peace. Since 1996 the UN has given the day a theme each year, like Women and Human Rights, Women in Decision-making and A Promise is a Promise: Time for Action to End Violence Against Women. This year the theme is Planet 50-50 by 2030: Step It Up for Gender Equality. “We have shattered so many glass ceilings we created a carpet of shards. Now we are sweeping away the assumptions and bias of the past so women can advance across new frontiers,” says UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon in his message for International Women’s Day 2016.

This blog post is part of a series where AYY raises awareness of equality-relates issues on the various equality-themed days throughout the year.
